How Much Do You Know About New Hope History?
Discover the rich heritage of New Hope, Minnesota, at Reese Orthodontics. Nestled just west of Minneapolis, New Hope began as a flourishing agricultural community in the early 1900s, originally part of Crystal Lake Township. As urban development spread westward in the 1930s, the seeds for a new community were planted.
The transformation began when Crystal Lake Township residents voted to incorporate as the city of Crystal in 1936. However, not all supported urbanization. The western half, predominantly farmers, resisted the city’s focus on modern amenities like street lights and sewers, which led to higher taxes. In a bold step to preserve their rural lifestyle, they separated and formed their own township, aptly named New Hope.
New Hope was defined by clear boundaries: 62nd Avenue North, Medicine Lake Road, and Highway 169, with a less distinct eastern boundary adjacent to Crystal. This area saw a mix of sentiments—while some residents sought annexation by Crystal for access to urban services, others cherished their independence, leading to a patchwork of affiliations along the eastern edge.
Despite its initial resistance to urbanization, New Hope faced inevitable change. By the early 1950s, the area’s demographic had shifted significantly, with the farming community becoming a minority. To safeguard its identity and territory, New Hope took a decisive step by incorporating as a city in 1953, just 17 years after the original separation. This move marked a new era of growth and development.
The newly formed city saw rapid population growth, increasing from 600 residents at incorporation to over 24,000 by 1971. Although the population has slightly declined since then, New Hope’s spirit of resilience and community remains strong. Today, as we provide expert orthodontic care at Reese Orthodontics, we celebrate our city’s vibrant history and its continual evolution. Join us in New Hope, where our past enriches our present.
